The Waterfall Bench FAQ
What wood can I make these out of?
These are currently offered in Walnut, Singapore Suar, Singapore Mahogany, and White Oak
What is it, actually?
The Waterfall is a style of jointing that places the legs of the bench right at the edge of the seat, with no visible supports such that the entire piece looks like it was carved out of one piece of wood.
In its ideal form, The Waterfall is made out of one continuous piece of wood such that the grain pattern of the bench continues over the edge like a “waterfall”.
However, this is typically costly due to the material required. Where requested, The Table Guy is able to quote for this option.
Our default option is to use as much of the same slab as possible to achieve the continuous grain depending on the length of bench requested, and wherever the slab falls short, a separate piece of wood will be used to make up the height required.
Why choose The Waterfall?
If these two words appeal to you, consider going for The Waterfall to complete your dining set.
The Waterfall joint is a 45 degree joint where the edge of the seat meets the top of the leg, requiring a degree of precision and care during the cutting process to ensure that it appears seamless and effortless.
We strongly recommend a beam support be included for all benches above 1.8m, regardless of the type of joint used. At the same time, we also recommend clients carefully consider whether they want to order benches above 1.8m in length in the first place, as they can be unwieldy to use in practical situations (imagine having to stand up to leave the dining table for a moment and everyone on that bench has to stand up with you!).
How do I order one?
We encourage clients to come to the showroom to pick out the exact piece of wood to craft from. During the appointment we’ll also take the opportunity to learn more about your lifestyle needs and exactly what you have in mind, to ensure that what you order is what you really want! What finishing do you use?
Our benches are currently finished with hardwax oil. The level of surface protection is slightly lower than for table tops as we expect them to undergo less abuse, and helps us save you money by reducing unnecessary costs.
If you intend to use your bench to double as some other type of furniture do let us know and we’ll advise on alternate finishing options.
